About Bill Caso

The use of vibrant color, rhythm and energetic brush strokes pervades my canvasses whether abstraction or figurative.  I attempt to bring to the viewer a sense of drama and excitement; my paintings are definitely meant to enliven a space and lift the spirits.  I incline toward abstraction since this mode of expression allows me the freedom to explore the interplay of color, texture as well as composition in its purest forms.  While painting landscapes, florals and portraits, my intention is to bring abstract elements into the canvas as well.  I feel this makes the work more interesting but it’s also to recognize that much of nature contains abstract properties.

Abstract expressionism, modernism and to an extent fauvism are the most prominent influences to my style; though I’m not sure whether I appreciate these movements because I paint the way I do or vice versa.  Either way, their freedom from convention appeals to me.

Though most of my work is free and expressive, I began doing art with graphite, colored pencil and pen and ink as seen in the “Drawings” section of this site.  The characteristics of these media result in more detailed and realistic or surrealistic artwork.  I bring this element to the canvas as well, but usually with pet portraits and similar endeavors.  Though I enjoy this type of work, I feel it’s a bit restrictive and prefer to relax and let go a bit.

I hope you enjoy my site.
